know, as the economy has gone down there's been more homicides in the area where i live and i see it happening in more places. >>> the president talked forcefully he will not negotiate about the debt ceiling. let me play what one of your republican colleagues told me about that yesterday. >> would you be willing if you don't get the cuts that you think are necessary, would you be willing to go into default or shut down the government? >> i think there is a way to avoid default, if it requires shutting down certain portions of the government, let's like at that. >> are you worried about a shutdown or worse, are you worried about default? >> i'm worried about both. default is like saying i ran up my credit card and now i'm not going to pay you it's going to be bad for the united states. i think we need to pay our xwils. that's the first thing. with respect to shutting down the government so we save money. we know anytime we shut down the government, we actually spend more money in the long run. i do believe we need or national parks or rangers there. i do believe that it is importan

. the debt ceiling, we need that certainty for the markets, for our economy. we know what happened when the republicans played around with not raising the debt ceiling in august of 2011. the economy was deeply hurt. we're in a recovery and we certainly should not let the republicans let us slip back with failing to provide that kind of certainty and not only the american markets but the global markets. >> congresswoman schwartz, thanks so much for coming on the program after a long weekend. appreciate it. >>> carrie, what's the republican strategy here? what happened with this extension? >> well, it's hard to view this as anything but a retreat of sorts. i mean, a few weeks ago, certainly in december, there was a lot of talk about using the debt limit in february to extract more from the president and the fact that they're pushing it back shows that they were not as confident in that position as they would like. they were pretty isolated in terms of the position. the business community was telling them not to do it. high profile conservatives were saying the same. this now sets them up

be. in presidential politics, there are basically two issues, the economy and war. and if the nation's economy continues to improve, if we're able to get out of afghanistan the way the president got us out of iraq. this issue of gun violence is emerging very quickly. and i have no doubt that it could become one of the dominant issues in the midterm election and also in the general election. >> also making news this morning, a story that has left a lot of football fans, well, you don't even have to be a faj because you probably heart about left folks feeling duped. notre dame's linebacker, manti teo's girlfriend died back in september, at least that's what we thought but it turned out to be a hoax. nbc's john yang joins me now from south bend, indiana. and john, what are we hearing from manti teo himself. >> reporter: last night teo issued a statement in which he said that this whole thing was incredibly embarrassing. he said they developed an emotional relationship with a woman i met online. we maintained what i thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently onli

to be on the agenda, but the economy and getting a growth agenda going is clearly what's going to be most important across the board for americans. but he's got some wind at his back. because the republicans know that number one, immigration is an issue they can't ignore and vilify anymore, they've got to deal with it, guns is another one. they're mired in a tactic on plunging this country into default and starting to come to their senses and realize this debt ceiling is a tactic that is really turning its head against them not against the president. so i think that you're always going to see the president making the effort to reach out. and spending, he's actually done that already. and that's where he's going to have to work with democrats as well as republicans. >> well, you supported both abolishing the debt limit and having the president use the 14th amendment. i'm wondering how you see the debt ceiling play out. >> well, i'm seeing the republicans starting to cave on that. they're hearing from the -- the president has made it clear he's not going to play that game. and if we mess with the deb
